New Episode of Herb Marks Freelance Opens October

On October 15th The Air Pirates Radio Theater, the only theater of its kind continues its Fall 2011 season with the premiere of a new comedy mystery. A unique mixture of live contemporary interactive theater and old time radio drama the company is once again presenting its live radio plays at the Lycian Centre in Sugar Loaf, NY.  The Air Pirates perform the staged readings as if they were broadcasting live on the radio.  An ensemble of five actors portrays all the characters in each episode while the audience is asked to produce all the sound effects. The Cue Card Girl lets the audiences know when it’s time to slam a door, make the footsteps and even shoot the guns during the shows. The Pirates even perform the radio commercials live asking the audience to supply the necessary sounds.

This new episode, Herb Marks Freelance: Time Wounds All Heals, is the fifth in the Herb Marks series, the play takes the diminutive detective into the bizarre world of cults and secret societies. The comedy mystery begins as Herb is hired to locate the missing heir to a lingerie fortune and finding out he’s probably better off unemployed.  The missing son of a wealthy dilettante, the shady characters, and Herb’s lack of cooperation with the law once again set the stage for a hilarious evening.  As always the Herb Marks mysteries leave plenty of room for the audience to become part of the action. With gunshots, chase scenes and of course commercial breaks the audience has plenty to do to move the action along.  Prior to the performance all the necessary toys are made available to the audience and they are given a brief review of what they are to do.  One of the unique features of Air Pirates Radio is the inclusion of commercials.  During each performance the cast takes commercial breaks in which they perform real ads for sponsors of the Air Pirates season.  Coffee and desserts are available at the family friendly performances giving a casual, friendly feeling to the Air Pirates Radio Theater.

Los Tres Balceneros Arrive with the Dead in Newburgh

On October 14th The Air Pirates Radio Theater, the only theater of its kind, continues the 2011 season at the Railroad Playhouse with Los Tres Balceneros: I’d Rather Be Grateful Than Dead. In this, the third episode of their musical comedy western the Air Pirates pay tribute to the Cult Rock Band the Grateful Dead with parodies of the bands most popular songs.  The story of Sonny, Ringo and the Kid is typical cowboy fare with bad guys, saloon girls and of course horses.  With gunshots, running horses and some of the most popular music of a generation the audience has plenty to do to move the action along.  The series has always taken on the most popular bands with kind parodies of the music.  In the past the Pirates have performed songs by the Beatles and Rap artists.  In this production they are paying their own type of tribute to The Grateful Dead.  Using seven tunes from the famous cult band the Pirates have built a story of the old west.  Written by Allen Brady with lyrics by Kate Brannan, I’d Rather be Grateful than Dead not only captures the Pirate humor but drags the Dead along for the ride.  Deadheads will quickly find friends in the cast and will certainly share their love of the band with the Air Pirates.
